These are the beginnings of the new Marae.
Please disregard the colours. The colours here are just suggestions.

The working drawings are being done now. Hopefully they will be ready for May. Then the building plans are to be done hopefully immediately after. The out for tender with our friendly builders. We should be ready for applying for funding by September. 3 months later-building. Sound familiar?!

Kia ora whanau. Mihi tautoko ki tenei kaupapa, he web site o Te Marae o Rawhiti! Tino pai!
Engari please allow me to comment on the plans in hand for the Marae extension.
I applaud you for obviously wanting to retain the Whare Tupuna as is! The rest, or shall I say the design proposal for the new buildings should be put in the bin a.s.a.p.
Please excuse my blunt way of expressing this, but I have hardy ever seen anything less inspiring. At least in the last 40 odd years, for the harsh and cold lines of this design reflect what was 'modern' back then. It reminds me in a cruel way in Ivan Merceps terrible proposal for a visitor center at Te Rerenga Wairua in 1999. There was a similar lack of Wairua in the orthodox approach, applying outdated design formulas. Some of you will know that I had proposed then an alternative, a design which incorporated the traditional Marae building shape under a huge cloak of a grass roof . Overall it had the shape of the to Ngati Kuri significant stingray.
Unfortunately an unsustainable costing and time frame imposed on the bidders, made it necessary for me and my partner architect Marty Evans to withdraw from the tender. The accepted design was never built, Ngati Kuri expressed their strong interest in my original design again last year and have now terminated all further development. Fortunately for this so very sacred site, this is a good outcome. "No building is better then a bad building"!
I hope that the members of the Marae committee will reconsider the proposed design and allow a bit more time, to look at other options.
Sometimes we have to go not to far from home to find the solutions we strive for. Let's not be blinded by the names of the 'big players'. What should count is the right concept which gives everybody within the IWI confidence and the right gutt feeling.
Naureira e te whanau, tenei te mihi ki a koutou ko Te Marae o Te Rawiti

I would be most happy to korero to you if you wish.
